ABOUT ME

My Recovery... Taking a Positive Footstep

When I started taking a few Positive Footsteps of my own 10 years ago, I began to recover from years of addiction and codependent relationships. After working in a number of unsatisfying, unfulfilling jobs for 10 years, I decided to take a leap and study Human Sciences at Durham University.  Next came social policy research at Bristol and, a few years later, teaching adults. I've always been fascinated by the different ways we each choose to live and have spent time tasting and experiencing different jobs, as there's more than one right way to live, after all!

Each of my learning experiences has opened up my thinking about what each of us considers to be "normal" and about the pressure to conform to someone else's ideal [family's, partner's, friends', the local community's and society's]. This is of particular concern to a codependent - trying to fit in around others' needs. My journey has led me to understand that recovery is an ongoing process which requires much self-awareness and the ability to take responsibility for one's own actions, feelings and beliefs. As Richard S Bach suggested:

"If it's never our fault, we can't take responsibility for it. And if we can't take responsibility for it,
we'll always be its victim."

When our focus is on others, it is difficult to take ownership of our problems. This affects the way we communicate with one another and the way we handle particular situations. Thanks to a mixture of formal learning, personal development work and some great teachers and mentors, I reclaimed my personal power and I'd like to assist you in doing the same.
