About Codependency
There are so many definitions 'out there' of codependency but they more or less agree that it is a dependency... an addiction to... a faulty attachment to.. another person. Just who that person is can differ from individual to individual - some become intensely focused on their partner, some on their children, some on their friend(s) - others need to be needed by everyone. The bottom line is... it's a need to be needed... about trying to fix others' lives - to help others to the detriment of your own physical/emotional/spiritual health and wellbeing. The idea that you have forgotten how to take care of yourself but are an expert on taking care of others.
Codependency varies in degree, like any addiction... There are those who have not become severely ill, as a consequence of over-caring, yet... There are those who have become depressed and anxious and have had therapy to help them address underlying issues which led to codependency; others for whom 12-Step Recovery (AA website and CoDA website) has worked to deal with active addictions and help them 'build a bridge to normal living' which can, in many ways, help to deal with some of the problems associated with codependency.
I have worked with many individuals, for some of whom group settings have not helped them to move forward; others for whom counselling has not (for whatever reason) worked for them. Like any approach, one size does not fit all, so I use a mixture of methods and techniques to bring forward the best result for you.
